The Top 5 Ways to Properly Care for Your Eyeglasses

After carefully selecting the perfect eyewear, searching for frames and shapes that fit your personality while complementing your facial features, you’ll want to take great care of your glasses so they have a long life.

There are simple and effective ways to get the most out of your eyewear. We are going to discuss the top five ways to keep your glasses in great condition for years to come.

Rinse With Water First

First, rinse your lenses off with warm water to rid the surfaces of dust and debris. If you immediately wipe them with cleaner, the particles on the surfaces of your glasses can be very abrasive and cause unwanted scratches.

Only Use Gentle Cleaners and/or Eyeglass Cleaners

If you’re home, use warm water and a drop of dish soap to clean your eyewear, along with a soft cotton cloth or microfiber towel. If you’re out and about, it’s a good idea to have a lens cleaner made specifically for eyewear. Other household cleaners contain ingredients like ammonia that can actually tear any coating on the lens. Try to avoid any cleaners that have bleach and vinegar, as well.

Air Dry as Often as Possible or Use the Proper Cloth

If possible, always allow your glasses to air dry after cleaning them. It eliminates the likelihood of particles collecting on the surface of the lens. If you don’t have time to let them air dry, make sure you use a clean, soft cloth.

You’ll want to use cloth materials that are either 100% cotton or microfiber. Be sure to take care of these cloths as directed on their care labels, and remove any lint before wiping your lenses. If you often reach for your shirttails to clean your eyewear, try to refrain from doing so unless your shirt is also 100% cotton and free of any dirt. Avoid the use of paper towels, tissues and napkins, because their textured surfaces can cause scratches on your lenses.

Store Eyeglasses the Right Way

One of the most useful methods of getting more life out of your eyewear is through effective storage. Never leave your glasses unprotected in a purse or a bag. Also refrain from leaving them on countertops and ledges, where they can be spattered with cleaning sprays or cosmetics that ultimately soil lenses or tear any coatings. Instead, use a well-fitted hard shell case, and lay your glasses in it with the lenses facing upward.

Focus on the Nose

When putting glasses on and taking them off, focus on keeping them on your nose, not your head. It’s common to adjust the sides of glasses around the ears, causing them to become misaligned. Even the best lenses can’t effectively serve you if they aren’t positioned well in front of your eyes. This handling method also applies to how we should hold our glasses while cleaning them.

If you put these tips into practice, you’re sure to have a comfortable pair of glasses that will stand the test of time.
